All applicants are evaluated after the application deadline using a very rigorous process. The evaluation criteria include a statement of academic interests and goals, standardized test scores, prior academic performance including GPA, letters of recommendation, and prior work experience. Applicants are encouraged to visit the department and meet with the faculty and doctoral students.
Students whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL. We expect TOEFL scores to be in the range of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) or 100 (internet-based). The TOEFL requirement may be waived if an international student has graduated from an accredited university where the medium of instruction is English. Official copies of all scores (GMAT/GRE/TOEFL) must be sent directly to Virginia Tech.
Admission decisions are made on a holistic basis by a committee of faculty. The committee will begin reviewing the applications in February. After all applications are screened, we conduct interviews with select applicants via Zoom in late February and early March. The program is a full-time program and applicants are only admitted for the Fall semester.
Students admitted to our program receive graduate assistantship support and tuition waiver. Assistantship and tuition waivers continue for four years as long as the student makes a satisfactory progress in the Ph.D. program. We also offer various competitive scholarships, awards, and grants to our students.
